The company is adding a new initiative to the Andes Solar Hub, which totals US$1.3 billion.
AES announced the start of operations at Andes Solar III in the Antofagasta Region, continuing the development of its Andes Solar Hub, which the company claims is the largest of its kind in Latin America and currently represents a total investment exceeding US$1.3 billion, according to Diario Financiero.
Andes Solar III, with an investment of over US$300 million, consists of a solar plant with an installed generation capacity of 171 MW and a three-hour, 171 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) that enables the delivery of renewable, flexible energy to the National Electric System (SEN).
According to the company, the renewable energy generated by the Andes Hub’s operations is equivalent to the consumption of nearly 800,000 households, making it a key enabler of the SEN’s decarbonization efforts.
«This contribution is supported by transmission infrastructure, with the Andes Substation serving as a crucial hub in the north and as the connection point for the only international power transmission line between Chile and Argentina (InterAndes),» the company said.
In the statement, AES Andes CEO Javier Dib commented, «Andes Solar III’s entry into commercial operation fills us with pride and marks an important milestone in our journey. It positions our Andes Solar Hub as the largest in Latin America and marks a key strategic step in our transformation.»
Dib stated, «Today, our team continues to advance construction of more than 2,000 MW that will begin commercial operation between 2026 and 2027, a clear sign of AES’s confidence in Chile as a sound, competitive platform for continued investment in renewable energy.»
«We will continue to contribute efficiently and responsibly to the electricity system, reaffirming our long-term commitment to sustainable energy development in Chile,» he added.
