The Spanish company won the public tender to provide official transportation services at Chile’s main airport, in one of its largest investments since initiating operations in the country.
Starting in May, Cabify will offering official passenger transportation services to and from Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, after being awarded a public tender in December 2023.
With an investment of US$25 million, the transportation platform is strengthening its presence in Chile, after entering the market 13 years ago.
The operation includes the incorporation of 50 Hyundai Staria vans, each with nine seats, which were specifically acquired for this service, as well as the installation of four service counters, two in the domestic terminal and two in the international terminal. According to the company, the project represents «one of the largest, if not the largest» of its operations in Chile.
In an interview with Chilean business publication Diario Financiero, Cabify stated that the investment reflects its commitment to Chile as a strategic market:
«We are investing in Chile because we see tremendous growth potential and a market that is resilient to economic changes that may arise.»
The company also emphasized the key role that Santiago Airport plays in its overall transportation strategy:
«Over the 13 years in which we’ve been in operation in Chile, we have consolidated our position as a major player in urban mobility—not only for individuals, but also in corporate transport. The airport is a vital link in this system, and for that reason securing this contract has long been a goal of ours.»
Cabify noted that the growth in passenger traffic was a significant factor in this new project, and that it may look to expand the vehicle fleet in the future.
In 2024, Chile reported a record year for air traffic, transporting over 28 million passengers, a 13% increase over 2023 and 8% higher than in 2019. Santiago Airport also broke records, with 25 million passengers transported in the year.
The bidding process faced a legal challenge from a competing company, but Cabify reaffirmed the legality of its participation and the quality of the new service.
The company also highlighted its collaboration with Chilean authorities in developing the project:
«We have worked closely with several authorities to develop this operation, including the Ministry of Public Works’ Directorate of Concessions, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and of course, with the airport operator, Nuevo Pudahuel.»
The initiative is aligned with the new “Uber Law”, although Cabify stated that its service was already authorized by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications.
Another relevant aspect of the operation is Cabify’s partnership with Hyundai, the supplier of the vans selected to provide the service.
«We didn't want just any option on the market, we wanted the best. That’s why we chose the Hyundai Staria van, which stands out for its quality, safety, and comfort. We placed a special order directly with the manufacturer.»
The tender contract has a duration of four years, during which time the company aims to consolidate its position in airport passenger transportation and explore new opportunities in the sector.
