Faced with the challenge of the technological revolution, the policy on artificial intelligence in Chile addresses the need to react and act proactively in the face of changes produced by society’s mass use of technologies.
In a statement, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation has announced the launch of a Public Consultation on the National Artificial Intelligence Policy that will serve as a roadmap for the development and adoption of this technology in Chile. This follows a collaborative process that included the participation of a committee of experts, an inter-ministerial committee and working groups in all the country’s regions.
The objective of the consultation, which was open until January 6, was to receive comments from AI researchers and developers as well as citizens who are exposed to this technology on a daily basis. The Ministry of Science will analyze the contributions received and prepare a document to be presented in the first half of 2021.
Minister of Science Andrés Couve noted that AI has been part of the lives of most people for some time now, making it necessary to develop a strategy on artificial intelligence in Chile that serves to promote the technology’s use and development.
“We want to promote an Artificial Intelligence Policy that addresses not only the socioeconomic opportunities, but also the ethical dilemmas and impacts that arise from its use, through consensus and commitments from the public and private sectors, academia and civil society so that this is a state policy, which can be updated and implemented by future governments,” he said.
Faced with the challenge of the technological revolution, the National AI Policy addresses the need to react and act proactively in the face of changes produced by society’s mass use of technologies such as AI. It sets out the strategic guidelines that the country must follow in this field over the next ten years.
The draft of the first National AI Policy proposes that the use and development of this technology in the country be guided by six transversal principles: AI with a focus on people, AI for sustainable economic development, safe AI, inclusive AI, AI in society and globalized AI.
The document is then structured around three axes - enabling factors, development and adoption, and regulatory and ethical aspects - for which it proposes different specific objectives and strategies for their achievement.
