Chile continues to lead the transition toward a more sustainable energy matrix, with a remarkable 68% of electricity generation in 2024 coming from renewable energy sources, according to data from the National Electricity Coordinator.
Chile has steadily shifted toward a renewable energy matrix over the past few years. According to the National Electricity Coordinator, in 2024, variable renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, accounted for 35% of the total, highlighting the growth of these technologies within the electricity matrix.
In December, renewable energy reached a record 77% of electricity generation, including sources such as hydropower, biomass, and solar energy, demonstrating the electricity grid’s ability to integrate various generation sources safely and efficiently. As a result, renewable energy accounted for about 68% of electricity generation in 2024.
In comparison, 63% of electricity in 2023 was generated from renewable sources, surpassing the 56% recorded in 2022. This progress reflects the country’s commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
Despite these advances, Ernesto Huber, Executive Director of the National Electricity Coordinator, told Chilean business publication Diario Financiero that key challenges remain to fully harness Chile’s renewable energy potential.
The priority aspects include:
The expansion of renewable energy not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also generates investment opportunities for companies looking to engage in the development of storage technologies, infrastructure, and renewable energy generation.
Chile’s energy sector, with its ambitious plan to transition to a 100% renewable energy matrix, offers an ideal framework for foreign investment in key areas such as renewable energy, storage technology, and transmission solutions.
This progress not only benefits the country, but also gives rise to business opportunities for companies committed to a sustainable future.
With 68% renewable electricity generation in 2024, Chile has reaffirmed its leadership in the energy transition within Latin America.
As new technologies are developed and transmission networks are strengthened, the country will position itself as a global benchmark in harnessing clean energy.
