Spanish GES announces its largest renewable project in Chile

Written by InvestChile | September,5,2025

The hybrid complex, with over 695 MW of power, features Latin America’s most extensive battery system and is the largest project in the company’s history.

Chile has become a critical destination for renewable energy investments, attracting international players who see the country as a strategic market for energy transition.

This time, the protagonist is the Spanish firm Global Energy Services (GES), which announced the award of a contract to build its largest project in Chile: a complex that combines photovoltaic solar, wind and battery storage, with a capacity exceeding 695 MW.

According to a company press release broadcast by Radio Bio-Bio, the initiative is unprecedented in the region, as it will feature Latin America’s most extensive battery system.

A strategic project for GES

Since arriving in Chile in 2013, GES has developed wind and solar projects with an installed capacity of 1,178 MW. However, this new complex will represent a major turning point for the company.

GES Chief Executive Officer José Luis García Donoso stated that this is «the plant with the largest storage capacity in Latin America to date.»

He also noted that «the project is strategic for GES: the combination of three renewable technologies in a single facility sets the direction of the sector in the short term.»

Clean energy with backup storage

The project model aims to provide a stable and secure power supply, even during adverse weather conditions or at night.

The energy captured by solar panels and wind turbines will be stored in large-scale batteries and fed into the national electricity grid during periods of peak demand.

This hybrid and backup approach is a significant innovation in advancing Chile’s decarbonization goals while enhancing the country’s energy security.

The boom of foreign investment in clean energy

The GES announcement comes amid other recent milestones that highlight Chile’s strong commitment to energy on the international stage.

In 2024, the European consortium HNH Energy presented a US$11 billion green hydrogen (GH2) project in Magallanes. Subsequently, TotalEnergies submitted an even larger proposal to the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA). The project, valued at US$16 billion, would generate at least 10,000 jobs.

This is the largest project, in terms of value, ever submitted to Chile’s environmental assessment system.

Public-private commitment to the energy transition

The government has also redoubled its support for the energy industry. A bill aimed at promoting green hydrogen development, which includes a tax credit of up to US$2.8 billion and a special tax framework for producers in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region, was recently introduced in the Chamber of Deputies.

This regulatory framework, combined with the dynamism of the private sector, positions Chile as one of the most attractive markets worldwide for innovative, sustainable energy projects.

Chile, a regional leader in energy transition

The GES announcement confirms that Chile is a hub for renewable energy projects and is progressing toward leading the integration of hybrid generation and storage solutions in Latin America.

For foreign investors, the country provides a stable and well-regulated environment, with public policies that encourage innovation. It is fertile ground for transforming the regional energy matrix from Chile to the global stage.
