The Not Company: One of the 100 Technology Pioneers of 2020

Written by InvestChile | July,3,2020

The Chilean company was recognized by the World Economic Forum for using vanguard technology to address global problems.

The Not Company (NotCo), a Chilean company that uses artificial intelligence to develop food products from plants, was one of the 100 companies selected by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as Technology Pioneers 2020. The companies selected stand out for their use of vanguard technology, ranging from artificial intelligence to carbon capture, to address global problems.

“These are the companies that think differently and stand out as potential game-changers. We’re looking forward to the role they’ll play in shaping the future of their industries,” said Susan Nesbitt, head of the WEF’s Global Innovators Community.

According to the WEF, NotCo stands out for developing the idea that “a combination of machine learning technologies and breakthrough science could create a quantum leap - fix the food system entirely and save the world for future generations.”

The WEF notes that NotCo began as a low-scale research and development facility, built in Santiago in February 2016, with only four employees, but went on to become one of Latin America’s fastest-growing food companies. It currently markets four categories of products in three different countries and has raised US$100 million from investors who include Jeff Bezos as well as partnering with global companies like Burger King.

Only four companies in Latin America were chosen by the WEF as Technology Pioneers this year: in addition to NotCo, they are CargoX (Brazil), an online trucking system that connects loads with carriers; Descomplica (Brazil), a company that harnesses technology to education for classes reaching millions of students; and Ripio (Argentina), which seeks to serve as a gateway to the new digital economy in Latin America.
