For the first time, Chile has been chosen as the World’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination in the World Travel Awards (WTA) which, through a voting process, celebrate the world’s principal tourism destinations and respect for extreme nature.
In Chile’s case, top destinations in this category include the Atacama Desert (the driest in the world), the country’s more than 4,000 kilometers of coastline with enviable waves for surfing, its over 100 national parks and reserves and the largest concentration of glaciers in South America.
The awards were announced at the 26th version of the World Travel Awards during a ceremony held on November 28 in Oman. Chile was also chosen as the World’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination for the fourth consecutive year, ahead of icons in this field such as the United States, New Zealand and Australia.
According to the Minister for Economy, Economic Development and Tourism, Lucas Palacios, “this is excellent news for Chile, filling us with pride and encouraging us to maintain our firm support for tourism in our country.”
He added that it is a reward for “years of work by many entrepreneurs to develop the activity and compete as equals with better known destinations overseas”.
“It is also an encouragement for the sector which, during the past month, has been affected by the situation in the country. I, therefore, invite all Chileans to choose Chile as a tourist destination,” said Minister Palacios.
He added that this invitation goes hand-in-hand with the #EligeChile (Choose Chile) campaign launched a week ago by the Economy Ministry, the Undersecretariat for Tourism and the National Tourism Service (SERNATUR) to encourage Chileans to travel within the country and, in this way, reinvigorate local tourism.
Created in 1993, the World Travel Awards seek to promote and develop the travel industry and global tourism by celebrating excellence and diversity. Today, the competition is recognized globally as a hallmark of quality in all the services and experiences associated with the sector.
