The US tech company Amazon Web Services (AWS) has strengthened its commitment to the region by announcing a US$4 billion investment to develop new infrastructure in Chile, which is expected to begin operating in late 2026.
The project is a new Cloud Region, which would join the existing one in Brazil -operational since 2011- and the one recently launched in Mexico, with the goal of facilitating digital transformation for organizations of all sizes.
The new infrastructure investment is specifically intended for the construction of three data centers, which will be located in the province of Santiago. This is intended to transform Chile into a new “infrastructure region” to meet the demand for cloud services in Latin America.
“The AWS South America (Chile) Region will help serve the fast-growing demand for cloud services across Latin America and in Chile with secure, reliable and efficient cloud infrastructure,” stated Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS.
“With the new AWS region, organizations will have the ability to build with advanced AWS technologies, like AI and machine learning, to help accelerate growth, productivity and innovation. By investing in local talent, educational opportunities and digital skills training, we’re proud to contribute to Chile’s economic growth and digital transformation for years to come,” he added.
What is a Cloud Region?
AWS Regions represent the ultimate in cloud infrastructure, built on a proven, resilient model. Each region includes at least three Availability Zones (AZ) that locate infrastructure in separate and isolated geographic locations.
These AZs are clusters of strategically positioned data centers, far enough apart to ensure operational continuity in the event of contingencies, but close enough to provide low latency for applications requiring distributed high availability.
With the addition of the Chile Region, AWS will expand its global infrastructure to 37 regions, including those already established in Mexico and Brazil. This new investment strengthens AWS’s commitment to Latin America’s technological growth and positions the region as a digital innovation hub with global potential.
