Santiago tops the list, followed by Delhi with 1,650 electric buses and Bogotá with 1,486.
Santiago, Chile has officially consolidated its position as the city with the largest fleet of electric buses in operation outside of China. According to data from the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the Chilean capital leads the ranking, followed by Delhi (1,650 electric buses) and Bogotá (1,486 electric buses).
Santiago currently has around 2,500 electric buses in service, with consistent growth driven by multiple public tenders that have enabled fleet renewal.
The most recent tender, held in 2024, will incorporate 1,267 new electric buses into the city’s public transportation system, boosting its electromobility transition. Grupo Cabal was awarded 70.6% of the electric bus contracts in the latest tender. The new buses will be manufactured by Chinese company Zhongtong, and will operate across three of the five service units tendered.
Key figures
Tomislav Matijevic, CEO of Grupo Cabal, told AS Chile that this new tender will bring the total number of electric buses operating in the city to 3,681, accounting for 57% of Santiago’s total bus fleet.
“We’ve seen remarkable progress toward a cleaner, quieter, and less polluted city, and that momentum will continue in the coming years thanks to a public policy that now extends across several administrations,” he said.
“The current government has made a clear commitment to electromobility, not only in Santiago, but also in other cities across the country such as Antofagasta, Valparaíso, Copiapó, Rancagua, Coquimbo, and in the near future Concepción, Arica, and Ovalle, among others,” he added.
The new, modern, and quiet buses come equipped with USB charging ports, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi connectivity, among other features, generating tangible benefits in energy efficiency and sustainability.
