Solarcentury has been awarded the right to develop a total of 1.04 gigawatt-peak (GWp) in a tender of land for renewable energy held by Chile’s Ministry of State Properties. Solarcentury has a global pipeline of 6 GWp and is currently building 644 MWp of projects in Europe.
According to the UK-based solar power company, it was awarded three of the 11 sites owned by the state of Chile, a larger share in number and size than any other developer participating in the tender.
All the projects are in northern Chile, in the heart of the country’s mining region. They will operate without any form of state subsidy and the company will pay the government rent for use of the land.
The total investment in the projects is expected to be in the range of US$950 million (841 million euros). They will contribute to Chile’s energy transition to eliminate carbon emissions as well as helping to create jobs.
“Solar is playing a critical role in the transition from coal to renewables to power the industrial sector in Chile. This is an outstanding achievement for our team in Latin America who have delivered a market-leading result despite the challenges of the lockdown,” said Frans van den Heuvel, CEO of Solarcentury.
Cristian Fuenzalida, business development senior manager for Solarcentury LATAM, indicated that the sites obtained in the tender are “some of the best land in the world to develop solar energy” because they offer an “excellent” combination of irradiance and cool temperatures.
