The wildfires that struck south-central Chile in January 2026 caused major damage to land and local communities, prompting a significant response from the business sector including substantial contributions from foreign companies operating in the country.

As the fires burned thousands of hectares and destroyed homes, organizations with a presence in regions such as Biobío and Ñuble not only provided immediate assistance, but also made long-term commitments to reconstruction efforts and the wellbeing of those affected.

Walmart Chile: Commitment to community reconstruction

One of the most notable initiatives came from Walmart Chile and Fundación Walmart, which announced a social investment of US$1 million in the Biobío Region to support families affected by the fires in their recovery process.

Implemented in partnership with Desafío Levantemos Chile, the action plan includes rebuilding damaged educational infrastructure and supporting local entrepreneurship programs in municipalities such as Penco and Tomé.

According to Walmart Chile’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Daniela Riutort, the contribution reflects its ongoing commitment to the communities where it operates. The company reaffirmed its presence in the affected regions—where it operates more than 30 stores with thousands of employees—and its willingness to provide support both during the emergency and throughout the subsequent recovery phase.

In addition to its financial contribution, Walmart has implemented measures including price freezes on essential goods at local stores, logistical support at collection centers, and the distribution of basic goods and donations to assist affected families.

DP World: A dedicated fund to rebuild employees’ homes

DP World Chile, which operates the Port of Lirquén in the Biobío Region, responded with a targeted initiative focused on its workforce. The company established a fund of

more than 2.0 billion Chilean pesos (approximately US$2.3 million) to support 164 employees who completely lost their homes due to the fires.

DP World’s contribution is specifically earmarked for the reconstruction or replacement of the affected homes, with the first houses expected to be completed within approximately 60 days.

The company’s priority has been “to contact and support every employee from the very beginning,” said Curtis Doiron, CEO of DP World Chile, providing not only financial assistance but also support and guidance for families during a critical time.
