This Tuesday, cold chain logistics company Emergent Cold inaugurated the largest temperature-controlled food storage plant in Chile in the city of Talcahuano, which involved an investment of US$45 million. The facility has a capacity of 37,000 pallets for frozen foods and three cold chambers, and will generate around 750 jobs in the area (150 direct jobs and an additional 500 indirect jobs).

Joaquín Del Campo Sanfurgo, Emergent Cold LatAm’s Executive Director for the Pacific Region, commented that the company’s “clients are primarily in the fishing, aquaculture, fruit, and general food sectors. The Biobío Region, in addition to having this diversity of industries with large companies, also has major logistics infrastructure.”

“Biobío has several world-class ports, and that’s why the region—and Talcahuano in particular—is one of the areas where Emergent Cold LatAm sees room to contribute to the growth of the local and also national economy,” added Del Campo.

In relation to the specific case of the fishing and aquaculture industry, “the demand for cold storage space has increased in proportion to the sustained growth of the horse mackerel fishing quota in Chile, which can be explained by the recovery of this fish stock and the focus on human consumption developed by the industrial fishing sector in the Biobío Region. On the other hand, the increase in Coho salmon production has also required higher storage volume during certain periods.”

Emergent Cold has been operating in Chile since 2021, and is currently the largest cold storage company in the country, with nine cold storage facilities and a capacity of 1,300,000 m3 in warehouses located in the Valparaíso, Santiago Metropolitan, Biobío, and Los Lagos regions.

It also operates in 10 other Latin American countries: Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala, Panama, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.
