The company’s President for Latin America and Caribbean noted that they have experienced «stable and positive» growth in the country and want to «continue boosting business.»
In recent years, elevated logistics chain and raw materials costs, animal disease, high inflation worldwide and even the war in Ukraine have put pressure on the global food sector.
Subway’s President for Latin America and Caribbean, Jorge Rodríguez, told Diario Financiero that the scenario seems to have improved greatly, at least in terms of the company’s local operations.
«After the pandemic, in 2022 and 2023, we experienced sustained, significant growth in Chile that exceeded our initial expectations. Seeing sales recover and surpass pre-pandemic levels has been gratifying, » he said.
Rodriguez noted that Subway had hit that target in the first quarter of 2022 when sales in Chile reached 11% growth relative to 2019.
He added that growth has been «significant» in the last two years, driven by key factors, like the 10% increase in online orders, «which took off during the pandemic and has become a preferred channel for consumers. This led us to implement advanced technology to enhance operating efficiency. Delivery logistics have played a crucial role in sustaining our growth.»
The company was simultaneously doubling in size. Rodríguez reported that the sandwich chain had conducted an intensive expansion plan, nearly doubling its presence in the local market. Since July 2020, it has grown from 108 to 204 restaurants.
«This significant growth reflects the strong demand for our products and the company’s ability to adapt to the needs of each country,» he said.
The executive noted that the company intends to continue expanding, opening 25 new locations in 2024, five of which are already operational.
«This comprehensive strategy reflects our vision of sustainable growth and leadership in the Chilean market,» said Rodríguez.
He remarked that the company aims to increase its relevance in Chile further, considering it «a strategic market for our growth in the region.»
He added that «Subway considers the Chilean market one of the most important in the region—the fourth largest (after Brazil, Mexico and Colombia)».
