Vestas to double its wind capacity in Chile with 2,000 MW by 2029

InvestChile - April,2,2025

The Danish firm plans to build between eight and ten new wind farms in Chile this decade, boosting its regional leadership and positioning itself in the transition to green hydrogen.

EOLICA ENERGIA WIND

Danish company Vestas, one of the largest global stakeholders in wind energy, has announced plans to double its installed capacity in Chile, adding 2,000 megawatts (MW) through eight to ten new projects between 2024 and 2029. The firm currently has 1,654 MW installed in the country, and is seeking to consolidate its position as a key player in the national energy transformation.

Rodrigo Terc, Vesta’s Sales Director and Country Head in Chile, noted that these initiatives are in different stages of development. One of the projects is close to starting turbine manufacturing, with the goal to begin installation in 2025. The company is also committed to combining wind power generation with battery storage systems to address the problem of renewable energy disposal, which, according to ACERA, will reach 20% by 2024.

Green hydrogen and new technologies drive growth

Terc highlighted the firm’s interest in developing green hydrogen, especially in the Magallanes Region, where Vestas was the first to install wind turbines. «The area’s potential is enormous, and we want to deploy all the new technologies we are developing in Denmark,» he stated.

Regarding the future of wind technology, Terc indicated that the industry is already working on grid-forming solutions, which will allow turbines to operate more autonomously, even after power outages. These standards are already required in Europe, and Vestas is adapting its equipment to the new technical conditions in collaboration with power operators.

The executive explained that while northern Chile will continue to grow with solar and battery technology, wind power will be key from Santiago southward, due to the availability of land, abundant wind resources and greater transmission capacity.

At the continental level, he emphasized that the renewable energy market in Latin America is dynamic and at varying speeds. «Argentina and Brazil have shown greater dynamism in recent years, but Chile is once again positioning itself as the most active market in the region,» he said.

With 188 GW installed globally, Vestas sees Chile as a strategic pillar for its expansion in Latin America, focusing on scalable projects that integrate clean generation with storage and new applications such as green hydrogen.
